The dividers is a form of circle with two pointed ends.

It is used in navigation to get distances from maps . So it belongs to the nautical cutlery in the seafaring .

Manual professions of dividers is used if accurate measurements are to be transferred to workpieces, such as in carpentry , of wood turning , in stonemasonry , the stone carving and metal . A special form of dividers is the calliper , with which dimensions can be taken behind protruding components.

In pétanque , the divider is used when the distance between two game balls and the target ball is so small that it cannot be measured with a tape measure or a tirette .

A "field compass" is a larger compass that can be operated by a standing person and is used to measure distances in the wild, in agricultural fields or in archeology . In the military field, it also serves as a status symbol for some armies. It can be set to a fixed size (usually 1 meter ). Its accuracy does not match that of a measuring tape.

Another model of the compass is the hollow compass for measuring inner diameters.
