Stefan Bohnenberger (born July 5, 1959 in Munich ) is a German visual artist, filmmaker, author and publisher. He is one of the representatives of poetic conceptual art .

Life

Bohnenberger was born as the fourth child of a racing car driver and yoga teacher from Stuttgart and a dancer at the Burgtheater in Vienna . Bohnenberger grew up in Munich, where he attended the Rudolf Steiner School. First he studied classical guitar for a year at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich. In the 1980 winter semester he moved to the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and then to the Free University of Berlin , where he studied art and film studies until 1986.

Works of art by Bohnenberger have been exhibited nationally and internationally in various galleries and museums for over 20 years. For example, The Golden Age was exhibited in 1991 in the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart . In 1993 Licht-Raum was exhibited in both the Folkwang Museum and the Bauhaus Dessau . In 1995 Goldquadrat was exhibited in the Voges & Deisen Gallery in Frankfurt. After further exhibitions, the exhibition Perfectly Ordinary and the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg followed in 1998 . One of his last exhibitions at the moment was the exhibition Behind Being, Front Being in the Fumoir / Rookzaal in Brussels, for which the corresponding book was created together with Josef Schlecht.

Numerous short films have been made since he was twelve. In 1982 the travel film On the Transience of the Moment was made with the German playwright and director René Pollesch .

The short film Missa Solemnis from 1984 was made in collaboration with Robert Plitt and Charles Citron. The film won a prize at the 1st Frankfurt School and Youth Show in Frankfurt am Main. His 2001 film Shigerat , which was made in collaboration with Simon Vogel, was presented together with the book in 2002 at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne. The resulting, in collaboration with Milena Bochet film Donkey shot in 2003 at the International Film Festival in Giza and the Argos Film Festival in Brussels listed in 2004, followed by performances at the Lyon Film Festival and Film Festival Marseille in France. In recent years Bohnenberger has increasingly made short video clips, which he calls Heiku films. He only uses master and martini shots for this.

Together with artist Jerry Williams (* 1943), who has lived in Sweden since 1988 , Bohnenberger was the curator for The Grand Panorama in the Slaughterhouse , Konst I Fyrstad in Uddevalla , Sweden in 2001 .

Since 1980 Bohnenberger undertook extensive trips to Central and South America, India and the Sinai Peninsula. He lived at times with the Mezeina Bedouins in South Sinai. Travel diaries (approx. 500 with a total of over 40,000 pages), photographs, films and site-specific installations were created during the trips.

Bohnenberger officially has 22 heteronyms under which he exhibits and around 20 unofficial ones that he uses for assistants. His aim is a labyrinthine anti-ego and a game with market-conform classifications.

From 1986 to 1989 he lived in seclusion on an old farm in Tuscany. At the end of 1989 he moved to Cologne and stayed there for 14 years. Bohnenberger has lived and worked in Brussels since 2003.

Golden French fries cross (24 carat), 1990

In 1990 Bohnenberger created the French cross and the sculpture Pommes d'Or . The french fries cross are two french fries nailed to the wall in the shape of a cross and were the template for the artwork Pommes d'Or , a gold cast of two french fry sticks . Both were shown in an exhibition for two months in 1990 and were for sale. Neither found any buyers. In 2005, the artist and the gallery separated. To get the gold sculpture back, he had to go to court. In the course of the dispute, the French cross was also demanded , but the gallery could not find it . After a six-year dispute with his former gallery, his gallery owners had to surrender the sculpture Pommes d'Or and pay compensation for the two lost chip sticks. The damage was estimated at 2,000 euros, plus five percent interest since May 2010. The gallery had to bear 90% of the legal costs of both instances. According to the usual fee rates, that alone would probably be far more expensive than the amount of compensation. The OLG had thus overturned a decision by the Munich I Regional Court. A revision was not allowed.

Bohnenberger has been working on peep boxes since 1992 . These are mostly small cigar boxes or tennis balls / table tennis balls that can be seen through a peephole . There are small installations in the boxes. For example, a peep box was created with Douglas Henderson (* 1960), which underlines and animates the last scene of “Romeo y Julieta” with a bell sound. A small cinema was created. The boxes are originals and were exhibited in various designs in the Ute Parduhn gallery.

In 1996 he created the Grand Panorama , a huge peep box in which the works of other artists can be seen. The Grand Panorama was first shown in Cologne and during the following thirteen years in Venice, Budapest, Bangalore, Trollhatten, Zagreb, Montevideo, Brussels and Sofia. A total of over 300 artists from all over the world took part in the project.
