Stefan Drews (born January 1, 1977 in Neubrandenburg ) is a German volleyball coach . He didn't commit himself to volleyball until he was 26, initially as a player and a year later as a coach . He is currently active for the second men's team at TSV Giesen . He drew attention to himself through his career from 2013 to 2017 in indoor and beach volleyball .

In the last few years he also studied economics, completed his A-coach training in volleyball, spent three years in the 2nd Bundesliga and was active as a speaker and beach volleyball team coach. In 2015 he became the father of one child.

Indoor volleyball

He started as a coach in 2002 at VG Ilsede and later moved to the district league for MTV-SG Borsum-Harsum. Two years later came the next move to MTV Wolfenbüttel , where he left the women's team after problems during the second half of the season.

In 2013 he met the coach Harald Thiele of the third division team SF Aligse and was hired as an assistant coach for the 1st men's team. The commitment was rewarded with promotion and from 2014 to 2017 the team played in the 2nd Bundesliga . During this time he successfully completed the A-trainer training at the DSHS in Cologne . After the 2016/2017 season, he left SF Aligse for personal reasons. This was considered to be the trigger for the team's withdrawal, as the required coaching license was missing, which is the authorization for the 2nd Bundesliga. The club could not find a suitable coach and as a result voluntarily relegated. He is currently one of two coaches for the second men's team of TSV Giesen GRIZZLYS in the third division.

Since 2013 he has been active as a consultant in trainer education and training and gives further education for licensed volleyball coaches in Northern Germany. He published his A-license homework topic on player intelligence.

beach volleyball

In 2011, together with Jürgen Basedow-Clark, he organized the beach volleyball world record attempt in Ilsede , with the aim of playing on a field for 100 hours non-stop. 228 teams were required for this event, competing in five tournament categories. The attempt was not accompanied by Guinness World Records as originally planned and failed after 72 hours when the field remained vacant for a long time due to human error. Nevertheless, the Ilseder increased the previous record to 72 hours.

In 2013 he was nominated as a team coach for the beach volleyball youth of the Northwest German Volleyball Association (NWVV). His teams finished 4th and 5th at the national cup in Damp in the first year . The team Cathrin Luker / Hanna Viemann made it to the finals for the first time in 2015 and took 2nd place. A few weeks later, the greatest success came with winning the German U18 championship with Inga Thiele / Hanna Viemann. In 2016 the vice-championship titles followed in the U18 with Greta Barke / Senta Barke and in the U19 with Inga Thiele / Hanna Viemann. Under the direction of national coach Silke Lüdike , Hanna Viemann and Svenja Müller took 4th place at the U18 European Championships in Brno / CZE and 17th place at the U19 World Cup in Larnaka / CYP with Lena Günther. In 2017, he and his team Anna-Lena Grüne / Lea-Sophie Kunst made it into the finals three times and almost stood before the triple , which no German team has yet achieved. He won the U17 national cup for the first time with Green / Art and became German runner-up in the U17 and U18 teams, making him Germany's most successful women's squad coach in the last six years in 2017. In three years he moved into six finals of the twelve possible German championships or national cups.
His team green / art took 9th place at the World Championships in Nanjing / China in 2018 under the direction of Leonard Waligora and two weeks later became German champion in the U18. Thus, Drews moved into the U18 final four years in a row with a total of three different teams and won this two times. In 2018, Lea Sophie Kunst and her partner Svenja Müller were nominated for the U18 European Championships by national training center trainer Leonard Waligora. Under the supervision of Waligora, the team first won the U19s in Kiel and two weeks later the U18s in Brno / CZ. With Lea Sophie Kunst he achieved the beach volleyball triple for the first time. Anna-Lena Grüne won silver at the DM U19 with her partner Greta Klein-Hitpaß .

In 2020, Greens will qualify for the German championship in Timmendorf with Olympic champion Kira Walkenhorst .

Discussion of dismissal

In October 2017 he was released from his duties as a management coach. The reason was u. a. in the reputation damage to the association that had preceded in June. In June 2017 he posted a comment on his Facebook page in which he denounced the excessive burden on female squad players across Germany. In fact, at the beginning of the beach volleyball season, he had to do without more than half of the players because they were injured or exhausted from the indoor season. The publication on Facebook generated a huge response that spread across Germany.

This topic was also published in the volleyball magazine in August based on an interview, which brought Stefan Drew's criticism from the NWVV. Well after the summer season, the NWVV published a notice that Drews was relieved of his duties. As a reason, the association accused Drews of not having heeded his own criticism and thus having accepted the injury of a player. Drews vehemently denied this and published a statement on his own Facebook page. A comment published by the association was then deleted. The reasons were discussed by the public on Facebook and the association was accused of a mud fight and pretended arguments. The speculations ranged from political decisions to the association's lack of critical capacity. The reaction and the sympathy for the statement by Stefan Drews was also great. Former, active and very successful players contradicted the statements of the association and supported Drews in his defense.
