Stefan Gandler (2018)

Stefan Josef Gandler (born January 1964 in Munich ) is a philosopher and social scientist . He grew up in Germany, studied in Frankfurt and has lived in Mexico since 1993 . He indicates his citizenship as nationally undecided .

Life

Gandler studied Philosophy , Latin American Studies , Romance Philology and Politics in Frankfurt am Main, a. a. with Alfred Schmidt , and was chairman of the Frankfurt AStA (1989/90).

In 1997, Stefan Gandler received his doctorate for a thesis on contemporary social philosophy in Mexico , which was translated into two languages. In 1997 Gandler became Professor of Social Theory and Philosophy at the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro and has also been a permanent visiting professor of Philosophy at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México since 2008 . Gandler has been a full member of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (category 3) since 2001 and founded the research project on critical theory of the National Research Fund of Mexico (CONACYT) in 2012. In his university sabbaticals, he researched and taught at the University of Frankfurt am Main (2001/2002), at the University of California, Santa Cruz (2009/2010) and at Tulane University, New Orleans (2015/2016).

The main research areas of Stefan Gandler are the critical theory of the Frankfurt School , critical ( western ) Marxism , philosophy in Latin America, ideology criticism and Walter Benjamin . He also worked as a translator of Spanish scripts. Gandler is working on a productive conceptual confrontation of the critical theory of the Frankfurt School with contemporary developments in Latin America, e.g. B. by the Ecuadorian-Mexican philosopher Bolívar Echeverría , with which their respective limitations are to be lifted: the philosophical Eurocentrism in the first, and the diminished ideological criticism in the second. He also falls back on the undogmatic reinterpretation of Marx's work by the Spanish-Mexican philosopher Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez , as well as by the Horkheimer successor Alfred Schmidt .
