Adolfo Sánchez Vázquez (born September 17, 1915 in Algeciras , Cádiz province , Spain ; † July 8, 2011 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish-Mexican philosopher , literary critic and writer who, as a university professor , dealt in particular with Marxism and its renewal .

Life

After attending school, Sánchez Vázquez studied at the Universidad Central de Madrid , where he was a student of José Ortega y Gasset . During his studies he was involved in the youth association of the Partido Comunista de España (PCE) before he went into exile in Mexico after the end of the Spanish civil war with the Sinaia , where he lived until his death.

He later accepted a professorship for philosophy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and taught there until his retirement . In addition to his teaching activities, he dealt in particular with questions about Marxism and saw himself as a critic of orthodox Stalinism . He tried to renew Marxism through humanistic and democratic approaches and wrote books such as Las ideas estéticas de Marx (1965), Estética y Marxismo (1970) and Del Socialismo Científico al Socialismo Utópico (1975). In addition, he wrote numerous other works as well as literary criticism.

For his scientific merits he was awarded the Order del Mérito Civil of Spain. He was also awarded honorary doctorates by the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), University of Nueve Léon, Universidad de Guadalajara (UdeG), University of Cádiz , University of Complutense Madrid (2000) and the National Open University (UNED). In 2004 he also became an honorary citizen of the province of Málaga .
