Stefan Hakenberg

Stefan Hakenberg (* 1960 in Wuppertal ) is a German composer.

He studied music at the universities in Düsseldorf and Cologne , including composition with Hans Werner Henze , to whose alternative cultural projects in Montepulciano , Alsfeld and Deutschlandsberg he contributed. Inspired by the experience he gained there, he developed his own projects, such as the opera The Children's Crusade for the Cologne Opera House. In 1994 Stefan Hakenberg received a PhD scholarship from Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts , where he studied with Mario Davidovsky and Bernard Rands . Further scholarships took him to the summer festivals in Tanglewood , Aspen and Fontainebleau , the artist colonies The Mac-Dowell Colony in New Hampshire, Yaddo in Saratoga Springs and the Worpswede studio house .

Among the interpreters of his music are ensembles such as The Chicago 21st Century Music Ensemble , Arcadian Winds in Boston, the Ensemble Phorminx in Darmstadt, the Bangkok Saxophone Quartet , the Duo Contemporain from Rotterdam, and ensemble unitedberlin Berlin.

His compositional oeuvre includes works for a wide variety of ensembles, from solo chamber music to works for music theater and multimedia installations. Of particular importance in his artistic career is composing together with amateurs as well as working with interpreters from folk music and from non-European cultures. He is one of the Art Directors of the CrossSound Festival in Southeast Alaska.

From 2008 to 2017 he headed the municipal music school in Darmstadt .
