Stefan Schmitt (born June 26, 1961 in Neckargemünd ) is a former German soccer player .
Athletic career
Schmitt began his career at SpVgg Neckargemünd and came to TSV Handschuhsheim through VfB Eberbach . In 1985 he moved to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg for SGK Heidelberg . Here the striker played all 36 league games in the 1985/86 season and placed second on the list of goalscorers with 22 goals this season, two goals behind Herbert Anderer from Offenburg FV .
Then he took him for the 1986/87 season of the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart under contract, where he joined the team around Fritz Walter and Jürgen Klinsmann . He played his first Bundesliga game on August 8, 1986 when he was substituted on for Predrag Pašić in the 2: 3 away defeat against SV Waldhof Mannheim in the 86th minute . In the rest of the season he played another thirteen Bundesliga games and one European Cup game. After he was only used once in the following season, he moved back to the league in January 1988 and joined SV Sandhausen . After he had only managed six goals in the championship in a year and a half, he returned to the old goal danger in the league season 1989/90 . With 18 goals this season he was third on the list of goalscorers, only Rifat Kolašinac from VfB Gaggenau and former second division professional Hermann Rudolf , who was in Diesten of SSV Reutlingen at the time, surpassed him with 24 and 22 goals this season. In the following season he scored another ten goals before he moved into the second tier under the newly signed coach Slobodan Jovanić in the course of the Oberliga season 1991/92 .
Today Schmitt works as a dentist in his own practice in Eschelbronn .
