Stefan Ulrich (journalist)

Stefan Ulrich (born October 19, 1963 in Starnberg, Upper Bavaria ) is a German journalist, writer and lawyer.

Life

Stefan Ulrich is the eldest son of the lawyer Albrecht Ulrich and his wife Christl. After graduating from high school in Tutzing , Ulrich did military service in Dillingen an der Donau and Starnberg. He then studied law in Munich and Freiburg , where he passed the first state examination in 1990 . After completing his legal traineeship, he passed the second state examination in Munich. He was then at Andreas Heldrich in Munich with the work on the right to identity in the civil protection of privacy for Dr. jur. PhD (magna cum laude).

During his studies and traineeship, Ulrich gained his first journalistic experience at the Badische Zeitung in Freiburg and the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich. He then worked for the Süddeutsche Zeitung from 1994 to 1996 as part of a voluntary press contract, including as a court reporter in Munich. In 1996 he moved to the SZ news desk , and from 1998 he was an editor in the foreign policy department.

In 2005 Stefan Ulrich moved with his family to Rome to report on Italy and the Vatican as a correspondent for the SZ . This is where his two bestsellers Quattro Stagioni and Arrividerci, Roma were created! . Quattro Stagioni was filmed for television (WDR / Arte) under the title Summer in Rome with Thomas Heinze and Esther Schweins in the leading roles. From 2009 to 2013 Stefan Ulrich was the SZ correspondent in Paris. During this time he wrote the book Bonjour la France! , which also became a bestseller and was entitled Salut la France! also appeared in French. Since the summer of 2013 Ulrich has been the deputy head of the foreign policy department of the Süddeutsche Zeitung in Munich. As deputy head of department, he has been helping to set up the SZ's new opinion department since 2018. He writes political commentaries, analyzes and reports mainly on Italy, France, Europe and international law issues. In May 2017 his first novel, the Tuscany crime thriller "The Murders of Morcone", was published in August 2018, the follow-up crime thriller "Die In Schönheit". Ulrich also writes travel guides, and volumes on Rome and Paris have been published so far. Most recently he published a city guide about Munich, which he wrote together with his daughter Franziska Ulrich.

Since March 2019, Stefan Ulrich has been the successor to Heribert Prantl as head of the SZ's opinion department.

Stefan Ulrich is married and has a daughter and a son.
