Criticism and counter-criticism

Kornelius' networking with think tanks and political elites was criticized on April 29, 2014 by the satirical program " Die Anstalt ". The satirical contribution was also based on Uwe Krüger . In his doctoral thesis on the influence of elites on leading media in the period from 2002 to 2009, which he accepted in October 2011, he counted Kornelius among the most closely networked journalists, who illustrated the discourse of the elites and spread their arguments on the topics of security, defense and foreign missions of the Bundeswehr and have campaigned for more military engagement. The image of threats and conflicts conveyed corresponded to official military-political doctrines. According to Krüger, the Kornelius network showed clear similarities with the networks of Klaus-Dieter Frankenberger , Josef Joffe and Michael Stürmer .

In an interview with ZAPP author Daniel Bröckerhoff ( NDR ) on May 14, 2014, Kornelius admitted errors in transparency, but defended his membership in institutions, as this is part of his business as a journalist. He forms his own opinion and does not represent the opinions of these institutions. For journalistic participation in political institutions, he drew the line at political advice. He criticized the exaggerated and unreasonable tone of dealing with him and the leading media as a whole. He assigned a special role in the criticism of the leading media to the research of Uwe Krüger . Krüger's thesis that the influence of elites determines the journalistic work of leading media and alpha journalists was rejected as unfounded.

He feels that his work on the advisory board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy is "a piece of social responsibility that he fulfills as a citizen and taxpayer."

In an interview in August 2014, Kornelius described Krüger's work as “political criticism in the guise of a scientific work”. He criticized the small number of examined texts and described the selection of the examined journalists as politically motivated. The editor-in-chief of ZEIT, Bernd Ulrich, noted in his book "Tell us the truth" (2015) that these transatlantic networks are a "transmission belt for the American way of thinking in foreign policy". "Because of this journalistic embedding" the foreign policy debate in this country sometimes has a strange American accent (...) Even those who don't know anything about the Atlantik-Brücke feel this, and it makes them suspicious. when it comes to a new realistic and honest discourse in foreign policy and to win back readers' trust. " (P. 47 f.).
