action

The Cologne journalist Michael Heinrich is transferred to Italy for a year as the Italian correspondent of his newspaper to learn about Pope Benedict XVI's trip . to write to England. His family is reluctant to come along. His wife Susanne makes a career as a lawyer, while teenage daughter Caroline has to leave her boyfriend Malte behind. The poor structural condition of the as yet unfinished property does not reduce the family's skepticism.

Michael immediately begins to seek accreditation in the Vatican. Since his accommodation has no internet connection, he sits down in the hairdresser's shop to work. There he met the archaeological professor Angelo Neri, who wanted to inform him about an archaeological world sensation. While son Tobias befriends the neighbor boy Andrea, daughter Caroline meets Toni. Ms. Susanne is now familiarizing herself with the grocery stores in the district.

Professor Neri now reports to Michael that he had found the old Etruscan temple complex Fanum Voltumnae , which is supposed to prove the matriarchy of the ancient Etruscans. In the Vatican library, Michael meets young Maria, who is familiar with the Etruscans and who later turns out to be the single niece of Padrone Ercole, the Heinrich family's landlord, who lives in the apartment above. While Michael asks his boss Baroness von Selbach for the 10,000 euros demanded by Neri, the accreditation at the Vatican is slow. While Caroline and Toni get closer, son Tobias is happy about the guinea pigs he has long wanted for his birthday.

Susanne goes to the beach with the children for the weekend. There Padrone Ercole asks her to help him in his trial on suspicion of tax evasion. Meanwhile, Michael helps Maria, who has locked herself out, to call a locksmith. When Susanne's parents stand in front of the door, who have announced their visit, they accuse Michael of having cheated on Susanne. Susanne finds it difficult to believe his assurances.

In the meantime, Michael learns that he has now received the accreditation for the Vatican, which he no longer believed possible. However, since he missed the plane to England, he forged his report on the papal trip. When he followed a call from Professor Neri into the alleged Etruscan temple complex, he and the professor were arrested by the police. In the end, his deception with the papal report is exposed.

Michael apologizes to his family for the disappointing outcome of the stay in Italy and wants to go back to Cologne, but his family insists on staying in Rome. Then he received a call from his boss, who wanted to keep him as Italy correspondent. Soon the Heinrich family will celebrate their first Christmas in Rome. Finally, Michael even gets an audience with the Pope.
