Stefanie de Velasco (born April 3, 1978 in Oberhausen ) is a German writer .

Life

Stefanie de Velasco grew up as the child of a German father and a Spanish mother in Sankt Augustin . Her mother, who was a single parent and a believing Jehovah's Witness , led her to membership in the religious community from an early age. She studied European ethnology and political science in Bonn, Berlin and Warsaw. She writes regularly for the Berlin city magazine Zitty .

Her debut novel, Tiger milk (2013) tells the story of two 14 year old girls who go out to be deflowered. What begins as summer vacation fun ends in tragedy when the two witnesses an honor killing . The novel has received various critical acclaim.

Tiger milk was dramatized and translated into several languages for the State Theater Hanover , the Theater an der Parkaue Berlin and the Comedia Theater Cologne. In 2014 Tiger Milk was on the list of nominees for the German Youth Literature Prize . In 2015, the English translation of the novel Tiger Milk appeared on the 15-author long list for the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize of the British daily The Independent . The novel was in the summer of 2016, directed by Ute Wieland filmed and was released on August 17, 2017th

In her novel No Part of the World , published in 2019, she processes her time with the Jehovah's Witnesses , which she perceived as being characterized by constant fear and alarm. She left the organization at the age of 15. Like her debut, Kein Teil der Welt 2020 was nominated for the German Youth Literature Prize.
