Stefano Visconti (* 1288 in Milan; † July 4, 1327 ibid) from the Visconti family was the third son of Matteo I. Visconti , the lord of Milan .

Life

In 1318 he married Valentina Doria , daughter of Bernabò Doria from Sassello and Eliana Fieschi , and had four sons with her:

under which the domain of the family was divided in 1354 after the death of Cardinal Giovanni Visconti .

Stefano died on the night of July 4, 1327 after a banquet he had given to Ludwig the Bavarian , shortly after his coronation as King of Italy .

Contemporaries linked his death to an attempted poisoning of the king, which led to the imprisonment of three of the four brothers Stefanos, Galeazzo , Giovanni and Luchino , as well as his nephew and later lord of Milan, Azzo Visconti , in the fortress of Monza : The Event marked a low point in relations between the Holy Roman Empire and the Visconti.

In the Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio in Milan stands the magnificent tomb, which was carved by Bonino da Campione in 1359 for him and his wife Valentina Visconti Doria .
