The Steigbach is a two-kilometer-long left tributary of the Töss . The brook is called Jungholztobelbach in its upper course in the municipality of Brütten .

The stream rises at 583  m above sea level. M. east of the village of Brütten at a foothill of the Jungholz forest between the Taa and Heisserütiweg, which run on both sides of the source. From the name of the forest area, the brook in the municipality of Brütten also has the name Jungholzbach.

After around 500 meters, the stream flows into the municipality of the city of Winterthur and from there bears the name Steigbach and takes on a small, unnamed body of water on the right-hand side immediately after the city limits. The stream then flows through the Steigtobel and, as soon as it reaches the Steigstrasse, takes on the Steigbrunnenbach again on the right (the upper part of which is in the municipality of Brütten Steigbach), and a little later the Hornbach coming from the Lüchental on the left . At the Steigmühle, the stream first crosses the Steigstrasse and a little later the Zürcherstrasse, the A1 autobahn and the Winterthur – Zurich railway line, and finally flows after two kilometers at an altitude of 438  m above sea level. M. from the left into the Töss.

Catchment area

The catchment area of ​​the brook covers around 2.85 km² and covers the eastern part of the municipality of Brütten as well as the Dättnauertal with Dättnauerberg up to the level of the Dättnauerweiher and a small part of the Ebnet .

The area of ​​its catchment area consists of 50.5% wooded area , 31.7% agricultural area and 17.4% settlement area .

etymology

The brook took its name from the Brüttemer Steig (today Steigstrasse), the course of which the brook follows for around 300 meters. According to Rutishauser (1967), the water in the municipality of Brüttens was still unnamed at the time.
