The Stein am Rhein is the oldest ship of the Swiss Shipping Company Untersee und Rhein (URh) , which is still regularly used for scheduled trips. The home port is Schaffhausen .
history
After the Second World War, the URh fleet still consisted of five ships, two of which were steamers from before the First World War. The ships could no longer cope with the increased volume of traffic. The board of directors therefore decided to put two new motor vessels into service.
The Bodan shipyard delivered the Kreuzlingen in 1956 . In 1957, the sister ship, the Stein am Rhein, followed . It replaced the 87-year-old steamship Hohenklingen . The maiden voyage of the Stein am Rhein took place on April 6, 1957. Until the Thurgau's commissioning in 1965 , the Stein am Rhein was the flagship of the URh fleet for eight years.
After the new Munot went into operation in 1998 , the Swiss shipping company Untersee und Rhein sold the Kreuzlingen to "Electronic Print Handels AG" in Diessenhofen, which has been using it as a charter and conference ship since August 2002. The shipping company used the sales proceeds for the comprehensive overhaul of the Stein am Rhein in 2000.
Naming
The ship is named after the medieval town of Stein am Rhein .
Technical details
The Stein am Rhein is a two-saloon ship and was originally identical to its sister ship Kreuzlingen .
In order to guarantee passage under the Rhine bridge Diessenhofen – Gailingen even in the event of flooding , the roof of the wheelhouse and the sun roof can be lowered , as is the case with all URh ships except the MS Konstanz .
The ship offers a total of 234 passengers, 100 of which are in the two halls. 78 outside seats are covered and 56 uncovered.
