The Thurgau is a ship of the Swiss Shipping Company Untersee und Rhein (URh) with home port Schaffhausen .
history
On May 5, 1965, the URh put its first large single-saloon motor ship, the Thurgau, into service. The construction of the ship corresponded to the so-called Lugano type of Lake Lugano. The Bodan shipyard built four large motor ships for the Società navigazione del lago di Lugano in the early 1960s . The Thurgau was derived from these and further developed for the conditions on the Rhine.
On May 12, 1971, the Thurgau ran aground between Öhningen and Stein am Rhein . The Stein am Rhein , who came to the rescue , also ran aground, but could be made afloat again that same evening. The next day, Thurgau was also able to be rescued from its predicament.
In the winter of 2010/2011, the Thurgau was subjected to a general overhaul in the Bodan shipyard in Kressbronn. A new engine system was installed and the wooden decks, the electrics and the toilet system were replaced. During the work, the Bodan shipyard filed for bankruptcy. The work was out of necessity in the URh shipyard. The Thurgau is the last ship that was worked on in the shipyard.
Due to a defect in the fuel supply, both machines failed on July 8, 2014 during a trip to Schaffhausen, to the old Konstanzer Rheinbrücke . The maneuverable ship was towed from the Arenenberg to Mannenbach and was repaired there.
By the end of the 2014 season, Thurgau had already covered 777,531 km since 1965. In the 2014 season she was the most frequently used URh ship with 191 days of action and 17,345 km.
Naming
The ship is named after the Swiss canton of Thurgau .
Technical details
In order to ensure passage under the Rhine bridge Diessenhofen – Gailingen even during floods , the roof of the wheelhouse and the sun roof can be lowered , as is the case with all URh ships except for the Konstanz .
The ship offers a total of 394 passengers, 110 of which are in the hall. 100 outside seats are covered and 184 uncovered.
The Thurgau is the only URh large ship to have an aft deck .
