To the northeast is Obersteinbach , to the east, Untersteinbach , the seat of the municipality of Rauhenebrach. In the south, in the area of Markt Ebrach in the district of Bamberg, the administrative district of Upper Franconia begins , the district of Neudorf bei Ebrach is closest to Wustviel. Geusfeld lies further to the west .

history

Wustviel was first mentioned in 1323. At that time it was called "Wustvilden", which can be interpreted as one of the deserted fields . The name probably indicates that the settlement was temporarily uninhabited. Rule over the village was long divided; in addition to the Würzburg bishopric , the subjects were also obliged to obey the Cistercian monastery in Ebrach . Even today, the forest ownership in the district is divided between Altburgers and Neuwürzburgers.

Already in 1453 the church in the village became a parish church. In 1614 Wustviel lost the parish. Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn moved it to the more important Untersteinbach. In World War II, 21 inhabitants died. On April 12, 1945 there was fighting between the advancing Americans and the Wehrmacht . The village was shot at from Untersteinbach. On April 13, Wustviel was handed over without further fighting.

The former municipality in the now dissolved district of Gerolzhofen was incorporated into Rauhenebrach in 1972 as part of the municipal reform.

The church in Wustviel

The center of the village is the Catholic branch church of St. Kilian. Your choir tower comes from the 15th century, when the parish church still stood. The nave was built in 1736 by an unknown master builder who probably came from the Joseph Greissing school . At the west portal there is a sandstone figure of the church patron and Saint Kilian in a niche in the gable .

The high altar comes from the late baroque and was created in 1710. It ends with a broken gable and is decorated with figures of angels and acanthus work . The Kiliansmarter is shown in the center. The large side altar with a picture of the Holy Family as an altar leaf also dates from the same period , the altar is framed by figures of abbots. A late Gothic tabernacle and an offering box from 1609 have been preserved.

In Wustviel, other architectural monuments besides the church have stood the test of time. In particular, the many wayside shrines in the corridors around the village are testimony to the popular piety of the population. A burial of Christ is set into the cemetery wall; it dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. A wayside shrine with a tabernacle attachment has survived from 1700 . There is also a large war memorial.
