Geusfeld is a district of the municipality of Rauhenebrach in the Lower Franconian district of Haßberge .
Geographical location
Geusfeld is located in the west of the Rauhenebrach municipality. In the north begins with the unincorporated area Wustvieler forest of the district of Schweinfurt . To the east, along the Rauhen Ebrach, lies the Rauhenebrach district of Wustviel . The district of Schweinfurt begins in the west, where the community of Michelau in the Steigerwald is located . The next settlement in the south is Ebrach in the Upper Franconian district of Bamberg . Further west is the Rauhenebrach district of Waldschwind .
history
Geusfeld was first mentioned as "Gulsfelt" in 1303. The origin of the place name allows for different interpretations. The name “Feld des Gulich” can be traced back to a Franconian aristocrat or the place may have been known earlier for its horse breeding, as “Field of the horses”. The district of Geusfeld was in the hands of several village lords for centuries. The Fuchs , the Hainach, the Schaumberg , the Schwarzenberg and the Geyer von Giebelstadt were wealthy here.
Konrad Geyer von Giebelstadt sold his share of the village on February 28, 1587 to the councilor and bailiff Valentin Echter von Mespelbrunn , brother of Prince-Bishop Julius . Valentin only remained in possession of the village for a short time, because on July 27, 1587 he exchanged the goods in Geusfeld for some properties in Gaibach that had belonged to the Ebrach monastery . From then on, the Cistercian monastery was also wealthy here.
For a long time Geusfeld was an independent municipality in the Gerolzhofen district . On July 1, 1972, it merged with some other Steigerwald places to form the municipality of Rauhenebrach and was henceforth part of the Haßberge district.
Culture and sights
Architectural monuments
The center of the village is the Catholic Kuratiekirche St. Martin. A church was probably built on the site as early as the 17th century, the foundations of which were incorporated into the new building in 1781. The east tower forms the facade and ends with a laced dome. The high altar dates from around 1700, with a picture of St. Martin from 1783 in its center . The side altars came into the church around 1755. The oldest element of the furnishings is a figure of Sebastian from the late Gothic period .
A kind of chapel is the memorial for the fallen of the First World War . It was created in 1927 by the artist Heinz Schiestl and ends with a hipped roof . A low residential stable from 1829 was classified as a monument, as was a portal with the figure of St. Elisabeth. A special feature is the so-called Kutzelstein, a late medieval cross stone. A legend has grown up around the stone.
legend
The so-called Kutzelstein is located on the old road to Waldschwind. Two girls are said to have looked after their cattle here and tickled each other to death out of boredom . Probably the name of the stone goes back to the parcel “Kutzelgraben”, where mainly fruit trees stood. They were dried to " Hutzeln ".
