The Schaffhausen is the flagship of the Swiss shipping company Untersee und Rhein (URh) , with home port Schaffhausen . With a capacity of 700 people, it is the largest Swiss passenger ship in the area of Lake Constance.

history

The Schaffhausen was put into service on May 14, 1970. After the slightly smaller Thurgau, which was commissioned in 1965, it was the URh's second modern single saloon ship. The ship replaced the paddle steamer Schaffhausen , which had been retired three years earlier . After heated discussions, it was scrapped to the chagrin of many residents of the Schaffhausen region.

Just six days after commissioning, the new ship collided with the Schaffhausen railway bridge . Several people were injured. There was considerable property damage.

On the night of May 30, 1987, an unknown perpetrator untied the ship from its berth in Schaffhausen, so that it was driven against the car bridge . Fortunately, the ship did not turn sideways. There was no major damage to the ship or bridge.

During a special evening voyage, the Schaffhausen ran aground on August 17, 2012 on the Rhine route between Hemishofen and Rheinklingen . The ship was able to free itself and continue to Schaffhausen. There was only minor damage to the bow.

For the 2013 season, the ship was extensively renovated in the URh shipyard in Langwiesen at a cost of approx. A galley and lounge were built into the visually and acoustically upgraded hall. There is also a new lounge on the upper deck.

Naming

The ship is named after the Swiss city and canton of Schaffhausen .

Technical details

In order to ensure passage under the Rhine bridge Diessenhofen – Gailingen even in the event of flooding , the roof of the driver's cab and the sun canopy can be lowered , as is the case with all URh ships except the Konstanz .

The ship offers seating for 373 passengers, 124 of which are in the hall. 118 outside seats are covered and 131 uncovered.
