The Steinerne Mühl is a river in the Mühlviertel in Upper Austria , which rises as Horský potok in southern Bohemia . Typologically, it is one of the waters of the granite and gneiss highlands.

geography

The river has its source near Svatý Tomáš (Czech Republic) in the southeastern Bohemian Forest as Horský potok . The source of the Zwettlbach is half a kilometer to the west . As the Kleine Mühl , the river flows south through the valley of the Steinernen Mühl and through the center of Helfenberg , where it turns west and develops some rapids. It finally flows into the Große Mühl south of Haslach an der Mühl .

history

The Steinerne Mühl, together with the Große Mühl and the Kleine Mühl, gave its name to the Mühlviertel. On old maps, the Steinerne Mühl is also listed as the Bohemian , Rauschende or Kleine Michl . A hydropower plant on the Steinernen Mühl in Helfenberg has been supplying a large part of the town with electricity for a long time.

environment

In the valley of the Steinernen Mühl, just before Helfenberg, there are block flows caused by the weathering of wool sacks, some of which cause the river to disappear completely under large stone blocks. You are probably the namesake for the Steinerne Mühl.

Fauna & flora

In and around the Steinerne Mühl, otters and beavers , dippers, kingfishers , gray herons and white storks (Haslach an der Mühl) live. Spring knot flowers bloom on some damp mill meadows . The very natural upper course in South Bohemia is located in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Šumava and is also a nature reserve. On the Austrian side at St. Stefan am Walde and at Haslach there are two protected parts of the landscape - the latter with a nature adventure trail.

Water quality

The Steinerne Mühl has a good water quality class from I-II.

economy

Many mills along the course testify to the earlier importance of the river. Smaller sawmills and electrical works are still powered by the water from the Steinerne Mühl today.
