Stephan Gorlov (also: Stephanus Gorlovius ; * December 27, 1619 in Neuhof ; † August 19, 1678 in Königsberg, Prussia) was a German philologist and Lutheran theologian .

Life

Gorlov graduated from the Albertus University in Königsberg with a degree in theology. He made his debut under Johann Behm with Miscellaneas Hasce Positiones Historico-Chronologicas, ad exactiorem Biblicae Historiae illustrationem pernecessarias and gave the disputation In Primam Philosophiam Decima nona De Operatione Substantiae Immobilis with Christian Dreier . On September 4, 1644 he became a Master of Philosophy and then took part in the university's lectures. In 1647 he followed Hieronymus Ernesti (1611–1657) as professor of the Hebrew language at the University of Königsberg. To this end, he asked Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg for a year to travel to Holland at his expense.

He wanted to acquire the advanced knowledge necessary for his chair there. To do this, he sought out Menasse ben Israel , from whom he was instructed. Back in Königsberg, he took over the chair that had been assigned to him and was appointed senior inspector of the alumni in 1656. In the latter position, however, he did not stay long, as he soon found another sphere of activity as a deacon at the Löbenicht church . In his capacity as a Königsberg university lecturer, he also participated in the organizational tasks of the university and was rector of the alma mater in the summer semester of 1662 and 1676 . Gorlov also appeared as a poet.

On April 25, 1656, Gorlov married the widow of the pastor in Rossgarten Mag.Christian Kuhn († 1652) Anna (* December 16, 1624 - November 20, 1694), daughter of the doctor of theology and pastor of the Königsberg old town Bernhard von Derschau ( * July 17, 1591; † March 13, 1639) and his wife Anna Lölhöfel. From the marriage the daughter Elisabeth (* 1652; † March 26, 1702), married to the councilor in Löbenicht Heinrich Liedert (* January 18, 1630; † March 21, 1705), and the daughter Gertrude (* January 18, 1653 ; † June 1, 1653) known.
