List of the rectors of the Albertus University in Königsberg
The first rector of the Albertus University in Königsberg was Georg Sabinus , Philipp Melanchthon's son-in-law . He carried the designation of a rector perpetuus . The main features of the university constitution - election of the rector and deans, position of the senate, lectures and holidays - Duke Albrecht issued on July 28, 1546 in the Constitutiones Academiae Regiomontanae .
Rector and Vice Rector
In a rescript dated August 10, 1547, Duke Albrecht announced that Sabinus had become a widower and had to give up the rectorate. Therefore, as usual at other universities, a six-monthly change of rectorate was introduced on Michaelmas and Easter. The election of the rector was entrusted to the Senate.
The Senate agreed that the four faculties - theology, law, medicine and philosophy - would alternate with one representative. If a chair was vacant and the faculty in question was unable to submit a candidate, the representatives of the other faculties moved up.
From 1567 the rector was always the heir to the throne of the Duchy of Prussia and the Kingdom of Prussia . Prince Albrecht Friedrich was the first Hohenzoller to receive the dignity of Rector magnificentissimus in 1567 . Since Prussia was raised to a kingdom (1701), Friedrich Wilhelm I held her for as long as he was crown prince . After the death of Emperor Friedrich III. initially no Hohenzoller held the office of rector. Kaiser Wilhelm II took up the custom again. In 1894, at the 350th anniversary of Albertus University, he personally entered his eldest son in the register as the Civis academicus . In 1908, Crown Prince Wilhelm invested as Rector magnificentissimus . He never entered into a closer relationship with the Albertina.
The management of the university and the management of official affairs were the responsibility of the prorector , the rector magnificus . From 1843 the vice-rectorate changed annually.
