Bernhard von Sanden the Elder (born October 4, 1636 in Insterburg , † April 19, 1703 in Königsberg ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Sanden, the son of a councilor, attended high school in his hometown and began studying at the University of Königsberg in 1653 . In 1659 he earned a master's degree in philosophy and began to give philosophical and philological lectures in Hebrew . In the same year he accompanied young pupils to Thorn as a private tutor , was at the University of Leipzig , at the University of Altdorf , in Tübingen , Strasbourg and Munich . His journey took him through Switzerland, France, then England and Holland.

In 1663 he returned to Königsberg and in 1664 became a deacon at the Löbenicht church . Because of the popularity of his sermons, a new choir was built in the church. In 1667 he moved to the Old Town Church in Königsberg , where after two years he rose to pastor the same and at the same time became a member of the Samland Consistory in Königsberg. In 1674 he was appointed associate professor of theology at the University of Königsberg, received his doctorate in theology in 1675 and was promoted to full professor of theological sciences in 1682.

In 1688 he became the first professor of the theological faculty and court preacher of Frederick III. of Brandenburg . In addition, in 1690, as a Protestant bishop in Königsberg, he was given the supervision of the Samland churches. Together with Bishop Benjamin Ursinus he officiated at the coronation service of Frederick I. In his sermon, using the example of David and Christ, he warned that a king must rule for the glory of God and for the benefit of his subjects. He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Königsberg University. He was rector of the Königsberg Alma Mater several times .

He had children with his wife, the daughter of a Königsberg merchant. Bernhard von Sanden the Younger and Heinrich von Sanden also became full professors at the Königsberg University. In addition, his son Johann Friedrich von Sanden gained importance as a lawyer.
