Karl Güterbock

Karl (Carl) Eduard Güterbock (born April 18, 1830 in Königsberg ; † July 9, 1914 there ) was a German legal scholar and legal historian . He was professor for criminal and procedural law and vice-rector at the Albertus University in Königsberg and a member of the Prussian manor house . His work on the genesis of the medieval criminal court code Carolina, completed in 1876, is well known .

Life

Güterbock was born in Königsberg in 1830 as the son of the postman Eduard Güterbock and his wife Johanna geb. Hirsch was born into a Jewish family .

He was a student at the Collegium Fridericianum . In the fall of 1847 he began studying history and law at the Albertus University in Königsberg and became a member of the Germania Königsberg fraternity the following year . He also spent a few semesters at the universities of Berlin , Bonn and Munich during his studies . In 1851 he converted from the Jewish to the Protestant faith.

After completing his studies, Güterbock first became an assessor in 1856 . On June 26, 1856, he married Antonie Alexandrine Henriette, née Reinicke. The marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter. In 1858 Güterbock was appointed city judge of Königsberg.

In 1860 he received his doctorate and in 1861 his habilitation at the law faculty of Albertus University. In 1863 Güterbock became an associate professor and Königsberg city judge. He was given the character of a Privy Councilor . In 1865 he became a full professor for criminal and procedural law at Albertus University and three years later gave up his work as a judge. In 1873/74 he was Vice Rector of the Albertina . On March 12, 1893, he was introduced to the Prussian mansion as the university representative for the Albertina. In 1905, at the age of 75, he let himself be released from teaching.
