Arthur Birch-Hirschfeld (born September 10, 1871 in Dresden , † January 31, 1945 in Danzig ) was professor of ophthalmology and rector of the Albertus University in Königsberg .

Life

Birch-Hirschfeld was the son of the pathologist Felix Victor Birch-Hirschfeld and studied medicine at the University of Leipzig and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He became a member of the Leipzig fraternity Germania . In 1896 he was licensed as a doctor and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD . He then worked as an assistant doctor at various institutes and clinics in Leipzig. Habilitated in Leipzig since 1900 , he was appointed associate professor at the University of Leipzig in 1906.

In 1915 he followed the call of Albertus University to the chair of ophthalmology . At this first university eye clinic in Prussia, which was independent of surgery, under the direction of Julius Jacobson (1828–1889), the only Prussian professor of ophthalmology from 1877 to 1889 , Birsch-Hirschfeld researched granulosis (formerly used for granulation tissue in trachoma , tubercle, etc.) Conjunctivitis granulomatosa), so that there was talk of a Königsberg school of trachoma treatment. He also made the clinic internationally known as a specialist in the field of eye socket disease.

Before the end of the First World War he was dean of the medical faculty. In 1932/33 he was rector of the Albertina. In 1936 he retired .

In 1944, after his house was destroyed, Birch-Hirschfeld moved to live with his daughter Anneliese Triller in Frauenburg . In January 1945, while fleeing the approaching Red Army , he died of a heart attack at the age of 73 in the house of his colleague Helmbold in Danzig.
