Wolf von Kötteritz (* 1516 in Altenburg ; † April 24, 1575 in Magdeburg ) was a German lawyer and politician.

Life

Wolf von Kötteritz was the son of the bailiff from Altenburg and Bitterfeld Sebastian Kötteritz and his wife Katharina (Mechthild) von Spiegel. He grew up in an evangelical family home. His father was there when Gregor Brück handed over the Confessio Augustana to Emperor Charles V in 1530 . In 1530 he was enrolled at the University of Wittenberg , which indicates that he was already trained for the university with Veit Dietrich at the Wittenberg preparatory school. He completed his legal studies in Wittenberg in 1542, was then educator of Count Ludwig von Eberstein-Neugarten in France and in 1547 was court advisor Albrechts of Prussia , combined with a legal professorship at the University of Königsberg . In this capacity he was also rector of the Alma Mater in 1550 .

He was friends with Andreas Osiander since 1549. In 1551 he was used together with Franciscus Stancarus as a mediator in the Osiandrian dispute and got into disputes with his sovereign, which led to his dismissal in 1553. In 1560 he went to the court of Georg Friedrich von Ansbach and Bayreuth , where he became high chancellor for the principalities of Ansbach and Bayreuth. In this function he was at the Naumburg Fürstentag in 1561, where he signed the Confessio Augustana on behalf of the principalities. With the support of Georg Karg , he carried out the confiscation of the spiritual goods for the princely administration and in 1561 wrote an expert opinion on the use of the spiritual goods, which was subsequently to become a guideline for handling the matter.

Due to arbitrariness, the celebration of an elaborate lifestyle, von Kötteritz incurred the displeasure of his sovereign and the hostility of the local officials in the beneficiary question. In addition, through his service with Albrecht von Brandenburg he had broken his lifelong oath and thus betrayed state secrets. Therefore, his appointment as high chancellor was declared invalid in 1562 and he was expelled from Ansbach. He went to the court of Count Palatine Wolfgang zu Pfalz-Zweibrücken as a councilor and bailiff, moved to the court of Johann Wilhelm von Sachsen-Weimar in 1569 and after his death, persecuted as a Gnesiolutheran , found his last refuge in Magdeburg.
