Johann Daniel Metzger

Johann Daniel Metzger (born February 7, 1739 in Strasbourg , † September 16, 1805 in Königsberg (Prussia) ) was a German medic.

Life

Metzger had studied under Johann Friedrich Lobstein at the University of Strasbourg and received his doctorate in medicine in 1766. He then worked as a private lecturer and in 1770 followed a call from Count Karl Paul Ernst von Bentheim-Steinfurt as personal physician, court counselor and medical inspector for the County of Steinfurt. In 1777 he became a full professor of medicine at the University of Königsberg and taught anatomy, physiology, pathology and surgery. His main field extended primarily to forensic medicine.

As assessor of the royal collegii medici, he became a maternity teacher in the East Prussian district, district physician in Samland and Königsberg city physician in 1780 . He then held a doctor's position at the royal orphanage and the great royal hospital. In 1779 he became a member of the Princely Hessian learned society, in 1776 a member of the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin and in 1779 a royal Prussian councilor. After being appointed royal Prussian personal physician in 1787, he was appointed royal Prussian privy councilor in 1802. In his capacity as a Königsberg university lecturer, he also took part in the organizational tasks of the university and was elected rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semesters 1789/90, 1793/94, 1797/98, 1801/02 and 1805/06 . However, he died in his last term of office.
