Johann Hoppe (* around 1512 in Budissin , † 1565 in Kulm ) was a German educator and school reformer.

Life

Hoppe had trained in his hometown and went to the University of Wittenberg in the winter semester of 1529/1530 , where he also attended the lectures of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon . After he had acquired the academic degree of a master’s degree in Wittenberg in January 1538, he became rector of the Protestant school in Freystadt following his studies .

1544 appointed him Albrecht of Prussia as a professor of ethics at the University of Königsberg , where he was President 1549th There he had contact with Georg Sabinus , but turned against Andreas Osiander and was therefore relieved of his offices in 1553. He therefore took over the management of the city school in Kulm and expanded it into a grammar school. The school was closed at the instigation of the Catholic Bishop Stanislaus Hosius .

Hoppe therefore went to Elbing in 1556 , where he built up the local school for three years in the evangelical sense, which also provoked the displeasure of the bishop, which is why he had to withdraw from the position after three years. Thereupon he took a job as a secretary in Gdansk and remained connected with the school system in Gdansk. On his advice, Achatius Cureus from Marienburg was called to Danzig and drafted the school rules for the Danzig Gymnasium . Since he married in Culm in 1560, he returned there and served as the city's senator until his death.
