Stephanus Hilpisch

Stephanus Hilpisch OSB , actually Ferdinand Hilpisch (born September 6, 1894 in Waldernbach , † July 4, 1971 in Maria Laach ) was a German Benedictine monk and church historian.

Live and act

Hilpisch's father was a plumber by profession . After the early death of both parents in 1909, his uncle, the cathedral dean and vicar general Georg Hilpisch , took care of his further development. First he attended school in Wetzlar , then moved to the Bischöfliches Konvikt in Hadamar and graduated from high school there in 1914. He entered the Rhenish Benedictine monastery of Maria Laach on September 27th . Only conditionally fit for war , he nevertheless had to serve as border guard in Luxembourg from 1914 to 1916 during the First World War . On April 30, 1916 he took his first monastic vow , the profession , and on September 3, 1922 he was ordained a priest in Maria Laach . Its sponsor was the renowned abbot Ildefons Herwegen . In addition to his mother tongue and Latin, Hilpisch also spoke fluent Hebrew. In 1924 he began to study history and religious history at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate in 1927. phil. From 1927 to 1953 he was a lecturer in church history in the Maria Laach monastery as well as librarian and chronicler of the monastery. His first literary works were unpublished poems. The first known text, written in 1919, was entitled: Jung Buchenwild - A fairy tale from days gone by , another text was: Der Silberhell .

In 1950 he became the new spiritual director at St. Marien Abbey in Fulda , which he remained until 1970. During this time he also worked on the Festschriften of Fulda, Mainz and Limburg for the Boniface anniversary . He also worked in Fulda as a prosynodal judge at the marriage court and as a consultant at the city archive. Bishop Johannes Dietz finally appointed him the Spiritual Council of the diocese. From 1954 to 1971 he was the main collaborator of the Fulda history papers. "It is time to mention Hilpisch's services to the historiography of Fulda, of course and above all to all ecclesiastical institutions and this in the broadest sense of the word."
