Stephan Körner (born September 26, 1913 in Ostrau ; † August 17, 2000 in Bristol ) was a philosopher who specialized in the works of Immanuel Kant and the philosophy of mathematics .

Life

Körner's father was a classical philologist. His family was of Jewish faith. At the father's request, Körner first studied law at Charles University in Prague . After completing his studies and doctorate in 1935, he did military service until 1939. Due to the invasion of German troops, Körner emigrated to Great Britain in 1939 . There he joined the army in exile in Czechoslovakia and took part in the battle for France in 1940. He then began in Cambridge to study philosophy with Richard Bevan Braithwaite , where he was also Ludwig Wittgensteinheard. In 1943 he rejoined the Czech army and took part in the French campaign. His doctorate in philosophy took place in 1944. Shortly thereafter, he married Edith Laner (Edita Leah Löwy), who also came from Czechoslovakia and later became known for the introduction of IT in the healthcare system in Great Britain.

After the war, Körner first worked as a German teacher at Cardiff University . In 1947 he received a position as a lecturer at the University of Bristol , where he was appointed to a chair in 1952. He held this position until his retirement in 1979. Körner was visiting professor at Brown University (Providence / Rhode Island, 1957), Yale University (1960 and 1970), University of Carolina ( Chapel Hill , 1963), Texas University (1964) and Indiana University (1967). From 1970 to 1979 he had a joint position at Yale and Bristol. Thereafter, entirely in Yale until 1984. From 1980 to 1989 he was also a visiting professor at the University of Graz . Körner received honorary doctorates from Queen's University of Belfast (1981) and the University of Graz (1986). He was made an honorary fellow in Bristol in 1987 and in Cambridge in 1991. Since 1967 he was a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .

After Edith Koerner was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer , the couple committed suicide together.

He is the father of the mathematician Thomas William Körner .
