Stephanos Bedros X. Azarian , also Stephan Petrus X. Azarian , (born December 31, 1826 in Constantinople , † May 1, 1899 ) was the tenth Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia . He was considered a very skilled diplomat .

Life

Stephano Azarian became titular Archbishop of Nicosia on August 14, 1877. He was ordained bishop on September 23, 1877 by Patriarch Andon Bedros IX. Hassunian ; Co- consecrators were the bishops Gregorio Balikian from Aleppo (Syria) and György Girk from Pécs ( Hungary ). From 1877 to 1881 he was Patriarchal Vicar of the Patriarchate of Cilicia.

His election as Patriarch of Cilicia took place on July 6, 1881 and was by Pope Leo XIII. (1878-1903) confirmed on August 4, 1881. In 1899 he was a part-time apostolic administrator of the Eparchy Ispahan in Iran . Patriarch Bedros X. was a highly educated cleric , he spoke eight foreign languages ​​and had a pronounced diplomatic character. He was a representative of the Sacerdotium , had basic theological , ecclesiastical and scientific knowledge and wrote several publications . In his patriarchy he founded educational institutions in the province and in Constantinople.
