Stephen Pisano

Stephen F. Pisano SJ (born April 16, 1946 in New York City , USA - † October 7, 2019 in Rome ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic theologian . From 2002 to 2008 he was rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute .

Life

Stephen Pisano was born in New York and grew up in San Francisco Bay . After visiting the Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose , he joined on 7 September 1964, the religious order of the Jesuits in Los Gatos , California , at. He studied at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and philosophy at Jesuit Gonzaga University in Spokane . From 1970 to 1972 he taught Latin , Greek and theology at St. Ignatius College Prep in San Francisco . From 1972 to 1976 he studied theology at Jesuit universities in Lyon and Paris . He was ordained a priest on June 7, 1975 in San Francisco . From 1976 to 1979 he completed postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome , from which he graduated with a licentiate in theology. This was followed by the doctorate to Dr. theol. at the Swiss University of Freiburg .

In 1982 he was appointed professor of biblical textual criticism and exegesis of the Old Testament at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. From 1985 to 1991 he was Superior of the Jesuits at the Biblical Institute and from 1996 to 2002 Dean of the Faculty of Biblical Studies. On September 17, 2002 he became rector of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, succeeding Robert O'Toole . He held the office of rector until 2008. His successor was José-Maria Abrego de Lacy .

Pisano was co-editor of an edition on the Torah .
