Stephen Robinett

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephen Allen Robinett (actually Stephen Hahn, born July 13, 1941 in Long Beach , California ; died February 16, 2004 in Corona del Mar , Newport Beach , California) was an American writer.

Life

Robinett first studied history at California State University, Long Beach , where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1966 , and then law at the University of California Hastings College of the Law , where he received his doctorate in 1971. He then worked as a lawyer until 1973 and then became a full-time writer.

In 1969 he published his first short story Mini Talent in the SF magazine Analog under the pseudonym Tak Hallus - according to Robinett, Persian for "pseudonym" - which he subsequently used several times. Two of his novels have been translated into German:

  • In Stargate (1974, German as The stargate ) first, Robinetts novel, it's about the confrontation of two great companies to the technology interstellar transport. A giant jump gate is to be built in space, a matter transmitter that works over interstellar distances , and the information that is crucial for the success of the project is in the head of the project manager who has just passed away. The information could be extracted from the dead man's brain if the corpse had not disappeared. The protagonist is the successor of the project manager, who now has to try to solve the riddle and not get lost in the shadow war of the corporations.
  • The 1978 published The Man Responsible (German as a man with responsibility ) is expanding the short story of the same name from 1977 of the novel. It is a 21st century detective story and one of the first SF narratives to address problems of artificial intelligence and the "upload" of human personality into a computer.

The last two novels, Final Option (1990) and Unfinished Business (1990), are located on the border between science fiction and business satire.

Robinett had been married to Louise Yeisley since 1969. In his youth he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma . Robinett died in 2004 at the age of 62.
