Streontion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Streontion ( Greek  Στρεόντιον ) is a place name given in the Geographia of Claudius Ptolemaios as one of the more northerly in the interior of Germania (πόλεις) with 31 'longitude ( Ptolemaic longitudes ) and 52 ° 10' latitude or 52 ° 20 'latitude becomes. According to Ptolemy, Streontion lies between Bogadion and Amisia . Because of the age of the source, the existence of the place around 150 AD can be assumed.

So far the place could not be located safely. An interdisciplinary research team led by Andreas Kleineberg, who re-examined the information provided by Ptolemy, is currently (2016) locating streontion according to the corrected ancient coordinates in the region around today's Bad Driburg in North Rhine-Westphalia ; thus the polis could have been another station on Hellweg - one of the most important east-west routes in Germania magna.
