The Stereopsidales with the only family Stereopsidaceae belong to the class of the Agaricomycetes . The type species is Stereopsis radicans .

The family contains only two genera, stereopsis and Clavulicium .

The genus Stereopsis has been shown to be polyphyletic in phylogenetic studies. So Stereopsis humphreyi belongs to the order of the mushroom-like (Agaricales), Stereopsis vitellina to the order of the tissue-like (Atheliales). The genus Clavulicium is or was polyphyletic. Buckle-free representatives are now placed in the genus Membranomyces , which belongs to the order of the chanterelle-like (Cantharellales). Their representatives are ectomycorrhizal fungi , while the other species of the genus Clavulicium are considered saprobic .

features

The representatives of the Stereopsidales have resupinate, fan-shaped to cornucopia-shaped or stalked fruit bodies , the fruit layer of which is smooth, so they have no surface enlargement by lamellae or ridges. The smooth, colorless hyaline spores have a noticeably refractive content that appears amber-like when dry. When alive, the spores are smooth, but when dry, they are conspicuously angular. The basidia are double-pored. Four -pore basidia can only occur in Clavulicium macounii . Cystides are present in the hymenium. The hyphae is monomitic, buckles are present throughout.

distribution

The representatives of the genus Stereopsis s. st. are pantropically widespread, those of the genus Clavulicium s. st. occur in boreal forest communities.

ecology

The representatives of the genus Stereopsis s. st. are native to tropical rain and cloud forests . They occur on dead wood or on the ground. The representatives of the genus Clavulicium s. st. are deadwood colonists of the northern latitudes.

Systematics

The position of the Stereopsidales is based on current genetic findings close to or within the Phallomycetidae (Geastrales-Gomphales-Hysterangiales family).
