Sterup (oil field)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sterup oil field is located in the north of Schleswig, in the Schleswig-Flensburg district , in the middle of the fishing peninsula , on the border with Denmark. It was to be developed by the drilling and production facilities of Central Anglia AS . The license was revoked because the company could not prove sufficient financial capacity.

background

All companies in the oil and gas industry with the ambition to produce on the mainland in Schleswig-Holstein broke off their search for oil from 2015 after Environment Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) doubled the interest rate for oil and gas and the resistance from communities, citizens' groups and associations became massive . As of 2017, there are no mining permits (onshore) in Schleswig-Holstein, only active production on the Mittelplate oil rig in the Wadden Sea off the Dithmarsch coast .

Central Anglia AS ( Mittelangeln ) is a stock corporation registered in Oslo, Norway , whose financiers from North Rhine-Westphalia withdrew from the project in December 2015. The company was founded in December 2013 by former managers of the Wintershall Group .

Claim "Sterup"

Central Anglia's license included searching for oil and gas in the “Sterup” field. The investigation area was about 200 km 2 . It extended from the community of Dollerup to the south via Sörup to Mohrkirch , to the east via Steinbergkirche to Gelting . One corner of the grid square reached into the Geltinger Bay . From there the border was drawn south via Oersberg in Rabenkirchen.

development

Central Anglia started its search for crude oil around Sterup in 2016 . She applied to the Mining Authority for a permit for seismological investigations to narrow down the location of the oil deposit and began taking measurements from winter 2015. The exploration permit was issued until November 30, 2016.

The company drew up a main operating plan and had it approved by the responsible State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) in Hanover in September 2015 . This also made it possible to take soil samples from the surface. However, the affected communities and the public were not involved in the LBEG's approval process. Therefore the municipalities of Sörup , Steinberg, Hasselberg and Ahneby filed an objection to the approval with the LBEG.

Central Anglia requested an extension of the exploration until 2019. Through research by the citizens' initiative against CO 2 -Endlager e. V. could, however, be proven that the financial capacity was not given. The license was then withdrawn by the LBEG.

Environmental impact

Local residents in fishing founded the citizens' initiative "Angeliter nachbohren". She collected over 6,000 signatures and handed them over to Environment Minister Robert Habeck in 2016 to draw attention to the possible effects of the drilling on the environment. They fear contamination of the drinking water. Possible leaks in crude oil pipes or other accidents at the oil production and storage facility are feared.

The citizens' groups also suspected that Central Angelina wants to press the oil out of the rock using the controversial fracking. However, this is denied by the company. From the application documents, however, it became clear that by no means only the Doggersandstones at a depth of around 1,000 meters, but also the Zechstein carbonate at a depth of around 3,000 meters was intended for exploration and later oil production. Zechstein carbonate, however, is generally not very permeable, so that oil production in this rock would probably require fracking. A similar formation was fracked in Mecklenburg in summer 2014 during the alleged fracking moratorium.
