The Sterzinger Hütte is a refuge in the Fundres Mountains , which are part of the Zillertal Alps .
Location and surroundings
The Sterzinger Hütte is located at an altitude of 2348 m in the upper Burgum valley, which branches off from the Pfitscher valley in a south-easterly direction . It is located in the municipality of Pfitsch in South Tyrol , Italy .
The hut is easiest to reach from the north-west of Burgum, a village in Pfitsch. An ascent from the Wipptal near Freienfeld is possible from the south . Towards the southeast you reach the Wilder Kreuzspitze , to the northeast you reach the Brixner Hütte in the Valler Tal via the Sandjöchl .
history
The first accommodation for hikers and mountaineers in the Burgum Valley was built in 1888 by the Austrian Tourist Club. As a result of the First World War , Austria had to cede South Tyrol to Italy, and in 1922 the hut was expropriated by the Italian state. In 1980, the Sterzing section of the South Tyrol Alpine Association , which had since taken over the structural remains, initiated extensive renovation and renewed management.
In the course of measurements, which were intended to prepare the renovation measures that had become necessary due to official requirements, it was surprisingly found in the 2000s that the Sterzinger Hütte is not on public but on private property. It therefore had to be closed in 2008. Only in 2015, after lengthy negotiations, was the AVS able to take over ownership of the hut, which is now run as a self-catering hut.
