Stettenberg (noble family)
The Knights of Stettenberg were a ministerial noble family based on the Stettenburg near Obervolkach. The family later resided in Gamburg an der Tauber. The gender is proven from the 13th century to around 1500.
history
The history of the noble family of the Knights of Stettenberg begins with the year 1237. At this point in time, a Ludwig von Stettenberg was first mentioned as a castle man at Stollberg Castle near Oberschwarzach . The name was mentioned a second time in 1247. Even in the oldest fief book of the Würzburg monastery from 1303 to 1345 knights of the family appear. A "Hartmudus de Steteberg" from 1304 is proven, as is his brother Konrad. They are mentioned until 1339.
The second line of the family, which had their estates in the Taubertal , was first mentioned in 1305. Several Stettenberger personalities are documented up to 1397. Among others, an Albertus, a Fritz and a Johann who worked as vicar in the Haug collegiate monastery in Würzburg. The last time the gender is mentioned in the sources around 1500. At that time, members of the family were still sitting as castellische ministerials in and around Volkach .
Possessions
The original ancestral seat of the family was the Stettenburg above Obervolkach. However, this had largely disappeared at the beginning of the 13th century.
As Ministeriale, the family held the office of Burgmann on the Stollburg for a long time . The possessions of the Stettenbergers were mostly fiefs of the Hochstift Würzburg or the Counts of Wertheim in the area around Tauberbischofsheim and the Hochstift or the Counts of Castell in the Steigerwald foreland. The knights also had few allodial goods.
