Steven "Steve" Bellone (born September 11, 1969 in North Babylon , New York ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Democratic Party and was head of the Town of Babylon from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2011 . As of January 1, 2012, Bellone has been the County Executive of Suffolk County .

Life

Steve Bellone grew up in Babylon and attended high school there. He then studied political science at Queens College in New York City , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1991 . The following year Bellone enrolled in the United States Army , where he was stationed as a telecommunications specialist at the Fort Leonard Wood garrison in Missouri . In parallel to his military service, he obtained a Master of Public Administration from Webster University . Later acquired Bellone at the Fordham University the Juris Doctor .

Political career

In 1997 Steve Bellone became a member of the Babylon Town Board, four years later he was elected mayor ("Town Supervisor") of the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County. Bellone was named Environmentalist of the Year by the Sierra Club in 2009 for introducing the “Long Island Green Homes” program that required homeowners in the city to reduce the energy footprint of their residential buildings .

In November 2011, Bellone stood in the election for the "County Executive" of Suffolk County and prevailed with about 57 percent of the vote against Republican Angie Carpenter. On January 1, 2012, he replaced Steve Levy . The office of head of the city of Babylon was taken over by Rich Schaffer. In the November 2015 election, Bellone was confirmed in office with 57.2 percent of the vote against Jim O'Connor. His second term began on January 1, 2016. After his re-election in November 2019, he took up his third term on January 1, 2020. Since the county executive's office is limited to twelve years, this is his final term.
