Steve Ellington

Steve Ellington (* 26. July 1941 in Atlanta , Georgia ; † 22. March 2013 in Montgomery , Alabama ) was an American drummer of modern jazz , the other important drummers like Tony Williams , Billy Hart and Jack DeJohnette affected.

Live and act

Ellington, a great-nephew of Duke Ellington , had piano and singing lessons as a child. From the age of nine he turned self-taught the drums to. He first played rhythm and blues , among others with Ray Charles . In 1961 he studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music . Since that time he worked with Sam Rivers , on whose albums he was involved several times; there was another long-term collaboration with Dave Holland . Ellington has also worked with Donald Byrd , Freddie Hubbard , Billy Eckstine , Hampton Hawes , Rahsaan Roland Kirk , Michel Petrucciani and Maxine Sullivan . Only occasionally did he lead his own groups. In the 1990s he worked mostly with the Hal Galper trio , which was expanded to include Jerry Bergonzi on the album "Just Us" .

Ellington was also a lecturer.
