Steve Tintweiss
Steve Tintweiss (born July 12, 1946 ) is an American jazz musician ( double bass , also melodica , composition) who also worked as a concert organizer.
Tintweiss, who grew up in Brooklyn and Queens , first played the tenor horn before switching to bass. He played in various matinee concerts in Birdland and took lessons from Steve Swallow and Gary Peacock and perfected his bow technique with David Izenzon . From 1965 he belonged to the trio of Burton Greene , with whom he accompanied Patty Waters on her debut album in December of the same year and went on tour the following year. In the same year he was also part of Bill Dixon's ensemble . In 1967 Frank Wright invited him to play bass on his second album Your Prayer . In 1970 he went on a European tour with Albert Ayler , where the legendary recordings were made at the Maeght Foundation . In the same year he also played with Burton Greene in the Netherlands.
Over the next few decades he performed in New York with his Space-Light Band , which included Byard Lancaster , Ric Frank, Rowan Storm and Lou Grassi , including Perry Robinson in some cases . In the New York Free Music Ensemble he worked with Grassi, Frank and Storm as well as the singer Amy Sheffer, with whom he can also be heard on their album Sanctuary Mine . He also worked with Milford Graves . As the founder and chairman of the New York Free Music Committee , he hosted a summer series of concerts at the Forest Park Bandshell in Queens for 40 years .
