Sir Steven Charles Cowley , called Steve Cowley, (* 1951 in Cambridge ) is a British plasma physicist . He has been President of Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford since October 1, 2016 .

Life

Cowley graduated from the University of Oxford with a bachelor's degree and a PhD from Princeton University . As a post-graduate student , he was at the Culham Center for Fusion Energy (CCFE) before returning to Princeton University in 1987. From 1993 he was at the University of California, Los Angeles , where he received a full professorship in 2000. At that time he was particularly studying solar flares . From 2001 he was professor at Imperial College London as head of the plasma physics group.

He researched explosive instabilities and turbulence in both astrophysical plasmas and plasmas from fusion reactors.

Cowley has been director of the Culham Fusion Research Center since 2008 and CEO of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority since 2009 . He is also a part-time professor at Imperial College London .

In 2012 he received the Glazebrook Medal for his leadership role in nuclear fusion in the Culham Laboratory, the operator of the Joint European Torus . He has been on the UK Prime Minister's Science and Technology Council since 2011.

In 2007 he co-authored the National Academy of Sciences report on plasma physics for the 2000s ( Plasma Science: Advancing Knowledge in the National Interest ).

He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Institute of Physics . In 2014 he was elected to the Royal Society . In 2018 he was beaten to the Knight Bachelor .
