Steven Peter Lustica (born April 12, 1991 in Canberra ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Lustica was born in 1991 in the Australian capital of Canberra to Croatian parents. He received his football training from the age of six at Canberra Deakin and later also at the ACT Academy of Sport , before joining the youth team of Sydney FC in the 2008/09 season in the newly founded A-League National Youth League . At Sydney he did not get beyond the role of a supplementary player when he won the championship title, he was not used in the final victory. After he noticed Paul Okon , assistant coach of Gold Coast United , during the Australian Youth Olympic Festival 2009, he was brought to their junior team for the 2009/10 season.

At Gold Coast, Lustica quickly developed into a leading player and led the youth team to win the title in the National Youth League in 2010 and 2011, and he also played sporadically for the professional team in the A-League in both seasons . Although Lustica was the captain of the youth team in 2011, was voted the best player of the season by the NYL players and he was an integral part of the Australian U-20 national team, the midfielder did not receive a contract offer for the professional team from head coach Miron Bleiberg at the end of the season because after whose opinion the 172 cm tall Lustica did not have the required physique for the A-League.

Instead, Lustica, like his compatriot Ljubo Milicevic , was introduced in June 2011 as a new addition to the Croatian top club HNK Hajduk Split . A short time later, he canceled his participation in the U-20 World Cup in Colombia so as not to miss the pre-season at Hajduk. The technical director of the Australian Football Association FFA, Han Berger , then did not rule out consequences for Lustica's further career in the Australian national shirt. Lustica itself stated in an interview in October 2011 that it had not had any contact with Australian association employees since its rejection decision.

Lustica caused a sensation in Australia again shortly after his move to Hajduk, when he asked for a comparison between his current coach Krassimir Balakow and Miron Bleiberg in an interview with an Australian soccer magazine and replied with "Bleiberg Who?" And his ex-coach subsequently not mentioned with any syllable. At Split, Lustica established himself shortly after his arrival in the professional team, played in the club's centenary celebrations in a friendly against FC Barcelona and scored his first competitive goal against NK Varaždin in November 2011 .

At the beginning of 2012 he was awarded as one of several Hajduk players as part of a cooperation for half a year in the 2nd HNL to the NK Dugopolje . After Lustica was only used sporadically in the first half of the 2012/13 season at Hajduk, he returned to Australia on loan to Brisbane Roar for the second half of the season . Under the coach there, Mike Mulvey , Lustica already played for the youth team of Gold Coast United. Lustica made twelve appearances by the end of the season and scored two goals. In the championship finals he reached the semi-finals with Brisbane. In the middle of the year he returned to Hajduk Split when the loan contract expired.

After he had only come to a brief assignment for Hajduk at the beginning of the 2013/14 season , Lustica dissolved his contract in mid-September and signed a one-year contract with A-League club Adelaide United .
