Stifftieae is the only tribe of the subfamily Stifftioideae within the Asteraceae plant family. The distribution of the approximately ten genera with 40 to 43 species is purely New World : only on the South American mainland in the Andes and in northeastern South America ( Guayana shield). The generic name Stifftia honors the Austrian doctor Andreas Joseph Freiherr von Stifft (1760–1836).

Appearance and leaves
They are woody plants: shrubs to small trees or lianas .
The mostly alternate and spiral, rarely oppositely arranged leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The simple leaf blade glabrous to downy hairy. The leaf margin is smooth.
Inflorescences, flowers and fruits
The cup-shaped inflorescences are usually terminal, rarely axillary, individually or in large numbers together in more or less large zymous total inflorescences . There are three to a few rows of bracts that envelop the flower head in a cylindrical or hemispherical manner. Chaff leaves are missing. Usually there is only one type of flower in the flower head, rarely both ray florets and tubular florets.
In the subfamily of the Stifftioideae all flowers are hermaphroditic. The five petals are fused. The flower crowns are tongue-shaped, two-lipped or radial symmetry . Sometimes crown lobes are strongly rolled up. The colors of the petals range from white, from yellow to orange and from red to pink to purple. The five stamens are tailed or spurred. The anthers have appendages. The smooth stylus have two scar branches, which are usually smooth or rarely papilose .
The cylindrical, bald achenes have ten ribs and a pappus made of many pappus bristles, which can sometimes be almost feathery. The pappus is usually white or straw-colored, rarely brightly colored: yellowish-orange or pink.
Systematics and distribution
The subfamilies Stifftioideae (D.Don) Panero and Wunderlichioideae Panero & VAFunk were reorganized in 2007 by Jose L. Panero & Vicki A. Funk. The Tribus Stifftieae was published as early as 1830 by David Don , in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London , 16, p. 291. The type genus is Stifftia J.C. Mikan . Their genera were separated from the subfamily Mutisioideae . As a result, monophyletic groups within the family of the Asteraceae in the relationship of the Mutisioideae are reached. These were used molecular genetic studies on the chloroplast - DNA .
It is only widespread on the South American mainland in the Andes and in northeastern South America ( Guayana shield).
The subfamily of the Stifftioideae consists of only one tribe with ten genera and about 40 to 43 species:

- Achnopogon Maguire, Steyermark & Wurdack : only two species are found on the Guiana label.

- Dinoseris salicifolia Griseb. : It occurs in Argentina and Bolivia .
- Duidaea S.F.Blake : The four or so species occur in Venezuela .
- Eurydochus Maguire & Wurdack : The only two species occur in Venezuela .
- Glossarion Maguire : The only two species are native to the Guiana shield.
- Gongylolepis R.H. Schomb. : The approximately 14 species occur in Colombia , Brazil , but mainly on the Guiana shield.
- Hyaloseris Griseb. : The up to seven species occur in Argentina and Bolivia.

Neblinaea Maguire & Wurdack: It contains only one species:
- Neblinaea promontoriorum Maguire & Wurdack : On the Guiana Shield and the adjacent Brazil.
- Quelchia N.E.Br. : The four or so species occurs only on the Guiana shield in southern Venezuela.
- Stifftia J.C. Mikan : The approximately eight species are native to the Guiana shield.
