Andreas Joseph Freiherr von Stifft (born November 30, 1760 in Röschitz , Lower Austria, † June 16, 1836 in Schönbrunn, Vienna ) was an Austrian physician.

Life

Andreas Joseph Stifft was the son of a Lower Austrian wine grower . He studied medicine at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1784. As a doctor he settled in Vienna, where he soon had a noble clientele among his patients. He also wrote a two-volume work from 1790 to 1792 with the title Practical Medicine . In 1795 he won a prize for his work on a functional reorganization of the " medical and surgical Joseph Academy " . With this award, he drew a lot of attention, especially that of the imperial personal physician Anton von Störck , so that he was appointed second Viennese city physicist and medical master . In the following year he was appointed court doctor and in 1798 as kk personal physician . In 1802 he became a councilor .

When von Stoerck died in 1803, Stifft was his successor as personal physician. He accompanied Emperor Franz I on the campaigns from 1813 to 1815.

In 1818 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1826 he was raised to the Lower Austrian knighthood . In 1834, when he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a doctor, he resigned from his position as personal physician. He died two years later, on June 16, 1836. He is buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery in a grave of honor (Group 0, Row 1, No. 64).

His grandson was the lawyer and writer Andreas von Stifft (1819–1877).

Act

A fundamental reform of the health system was carried out under Stifft. He was also able to redesign medical studies at all universities of the empire on the basis of the trust that the emperor had in him .

During his time the great cholera epidemic fell in Vienna in 1831. The criticisms of his behavior are mixed. While some saw in him a person who , as a 70-year-old man, still succeeded in raising the sunk courage of the population through his energetic demeanor in the general chaos , while critics accused him that the cholera raged so violently that he considered it not to be contagious depicted.

Stifft's work in a purely scientific relationship is less deserving. Although he was together with his colleague JN v. Raimann is co-editor of the “Medicinische Jahrbuch der kk Österreichischen Staat”, he has also written a few smaller papers, but otherwise he is not free from the reproach “that in his unrestricted rule over all parts of the public sanitary system he was often arbitrarily and personally interests proceeded, some talent rather repressed than encouraged and only careerists, sycophants and those probably wanted the blind for its institutions praise had so men like P. Frank and JN Rust had not to enjoy his protection and had to leave Vienna. " . Even Paul Partsch could experience the arbitrariness Stiffts. He was only able to achieve the position of curator of the kk Hof-Naturalienkabinette at the age of 63, since his advancement was blocked by Stifft for many years.
