Stillwater is a settlement in the Gray District of the West Coast regionon the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located about 11.5 km east of Greymouth at the confluence of the Arnold River in the Gray River . The New Zealand State Highway 7 , which connects the settlement directly with Greymouth , runs through Stillwater . The closest settlements are Dobson and Brunner , around 3 km to the west, and Ngahere and Blackball , around 9.5 km to the northeast.
In Stillwater the railway connection of the Stillwater-Westport Line branches off from the Midland Line . The express trains of the TranzAlpine run through Stillwater , but have no stop there, which, however, still existed for regional traffic until the middle of the 20th century.

65 miners were killed in an explosion in a mining pit in Brunner in 1896 . 33 of them were buried in a mass grave in Stillwater .
