history

The castle was probably built in the 12th century. The Stuchse ( Stüchse , the old name is Stuchsenstein ), the Styrian main road, which was called Stuchs von Trautmannsdorf from the later 12th century (near Schwechat, where the place Stixneusiedl also takes its name from the family) , probably came from here .

In 1347 the castle was renovated after a fire and was administered by the sovereign from 1350. The Stuchsen family died out in 1426.

In 1487 the castle was conquered by the Hungarians under Matthias Corvinus , but fell back to the Habsburgs in 1490 .

On November 28, 1520, the castle was built by Emperor Maximilian I . handed over to Marx Treitzsaurwein . After his death in 1527 it passed into the possession of his widow Barbara geb. Keckh, which she handed over to her son-in-law Wolfgang Strein zu Schwarzenau in 1531 .

In 1547 ownership passed to the Hoyos . The residence was renovated in 1549. The facility was badly damaged by further fires in 1735 and 1803 and only partially restored by 1832.

The castle has been owned by the municipality of Vienna since 1937 . Today it is used as a venue. In 1996 the cities of Vienna and Ternitz decided to renovate the castle and make it accessible to the public. The Friends of Stixenstein Castle was founded for this purpose . Renovation work for 274,000 euros is to be carried out by the end of 2018.
