The Neunkirchner Naturfreundehaus , also the Naturfreundehütte Flatzer Wand or Flatzer Hütte , is the refuge of the Neunkirchen local group of Austria's Friends of Nature .

Location and surroundings

The refuge is at an altitude of 758  m above sea level. A. on the Kranzstetten, a saddle west of the Flatzer Wand in the Gutenstein Alps in the municipality of Ternitz in southern Lower Austria . To the east the view falls down to the village of Flatz and the more distant Neunkirchen, to the west the Schneeberg can be seen.

history

The first hut not far from the current location was opened at Pentecost 1924. In 1928, the previously leased property was acquired, as was the land on which today's Friends of Nature House is located.

In 1934, as a result of the Austrian civil war , the association was banned as a social democratic workers' organization, and smelters and property were confiscated by the Neunkirchen district administration and handed over to the ÖTV Bergfreunde . In 1938 the Gestapo incorporated the hut into the Reich Association for German Youth Hostels . On May 4, 1945, four days before the end of the war, the hut was set on fire and destroyed by the Soviet Army . The property remained in German ownership after the war, the land was not returned to Austria until 1951 and a year later to the Neunkirchen local group, which was re-established in 1945.

The west side of the hut

However, under the difficult post-war conditions, construction work on a new hut had already started in 1946. All building materials had to be carried up on foot, only when the Heiligenkreuz Abbey built a forest road on the Flatzer wall did the transport options improve. In 1966 the new hut was opened.

The kitchen and the overnight room for the hut service were added later, as was a garage with a dance floor above . In 1989 the hut was connected to the power grid, until then the power supply was provided by a diesel generator . In 1993, new toilet facilities were built to replace the outhouse that had been used up until then . Telephone connection, water disinfection system and a cold room for drinks followed.
