history

The name "Ternitz" was first mentioned in a document in 1352 as a field name ( for the Tehannts , land register of St. Lorenzen). The center of today's Ternitz should have been densely populated as early as the Middle Ages, and the remains of the Thomb dam also bear witness to this time. Over the centuries it became deserted until it was revitalized in the 19th century through the extension of the southern line in 1842 (Ternitz station in 1847) and through the establishment of a hammer mill in 1846 by Franz Müller. In 1862 Alexander von Schoeller bought the factory from the then owner Reichenbach and four years later founded the Ternitzer iron and steel works (→ Schoeller-Bleckmann steel works ). The settlement of the steel industry resulted in workers' settlements and the population grew steadily, soon over 1000 people were working in the plant.

The Ternitz settlement area was in the areas of the communities of St. Johann am Steinfeld, Dunkelstein and Rohrbach am Steinfeld. In 1923 these three places were merged to form the municipality of Ternitz. In 1948 Ternitz was promoted to town. In 1969 the municipalities of Flatz and Sieding merged with Ternitz and in 1974 the municipalities of Pottschach and Raglitz were combined with the municipality of Ternitz.
