Stjernen is an ice hockey club from Fredrikstad , Norway and plays in Norway's highest league, the GET-ligaen . The club's home games are played in the Stjernehallen .

history

Stjernen was founded in 1960 when the junior team The Star was renamed to the direct Norwegian translation Stjernen in order to comply with the rules of the Norwegian Ice Hockey Federation. After the club had trained and played on an open ice rink for more than ten years or had to rent Ice Age from local rivals Sparta Warriors , Stjernen received its own ice rink in 1970, the Stjernehallen.

Based on a good promotion of young talent and the now improved training opportunities, success soon set in and Stjernen rose to the league system. In 1974 the team reached the first division in the club's history for the first time. Stjernen celebrated the greatest success in the club's history in 1981, when the team beat Vålerenga IF 2-1 in the Best of Three series of the play-offs , becoming the first club outside Oslo to win the Norwegian Championship .

In the 1980s Stjernen dominated the league with players such as Ørjan Løvdal, Rune Gulliksen, Hans Edlund, Pål Gjermundsen and later Morten Finstad and the Canadian Chris St. Cyr , but winning the championship could only be repeated once when the club was 1986 Frisk defeated in the final.

Even at the beginning of the 1990s, the team fought repeatedly for the championship title and reached the final in 1992 and 1995, but the team did not win the title. At the end of the 1990s, the club had economic problems and was no longer providing enough support for the next generation, so that the club was close to bankruptcy several times.

In the 2005/06 season, however, a reconstruction process was fruitful when the team finished second in the league and narrowly missed the play-off final.
