Location of Stockbrunnen in Bergisch Gladbach

Stockbrunnen is a district in the Bensberg district of Bergisch Gladbach , which is no longer perceived as such. Instead, today's street Am Stockbrunnen reminds of it.

history

The settlement name Stockbrunnen refers to the former Stockbrunnen, a public community well that supplied the citizens and cattle with the necessary water until the central water supply was put into operation. Between 1901 and 1913 an approx. 70 km long water pipe network was laid in Bensberg, which made the well supply in the center of the village unnecessary. There are two explanations for the term stick fountain:

  1. The name Stockbrunnen is on a map from 1901. It is derived from the Middle High German “stockbrunne” (= fountain tube ).
  2. According to another interpretation, the defining word stick in the sense of stagnate / freeze could refer to stationary well water that is not fed by running water.
